Dertien patiënten van het Catharinaziekenhuis in Eindhoven hebben het norovirus opgelopen. Volgens het Eindhovens Dagblad is een opnamestop afgekondigd voor de afdeling interne geneeskunde. Dat is gedaan om de besmetting van andere patiënten te voorkomen. Ook worden de patiënten op de afdeling niet verplaatst.

Musgrove Park Hospital norovirus outbreak

Portman, Exmoor and Sedgemoor wards are currently closed to new admissions due to Norovirus.

Responsible Visiting – How you can help keep Musgrove free of Norovirus (winter vomiting)

Keeping our patients safe from infection is a priority at Musgrove Park Hospital and we have robust procedures in place when dealing with outbreaks of Norovirus.

As soon as Norovirus is suspected the ward is closed to new admissions and transfers are stopped to help reduce the risk of spread. Staff members permanently based on wards with infected patients are not allowed to work on other wards. Infected wards are not re-opened until there have been no patient with symptoms for 72 hours. Before re-opening to new admissions, the ward and equipment is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

As a visitor you can also help us to prevent the spread of infections, like Norovirus, to patients by:

Not visiting the hospital if you, or anyone you have been in contact with, have had any symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting in the last two days . Stomach bugs that cause diarrhoea and vomiting such as Norovirus are highly contagious and can spread rapidly through schools, colleges and hospitals.
Using the hand gel at the entrance to the ward and again on leaving. Rub the gel into your hands until it fully evaporates ( approximately 30 seconds) without forgetting fingernails, thumbs between fingers and wrists.

If you visit more than one patient please clean your hands in between visits too. If you visit the hospital when you are unwell you run the risk of passing harmful bugs on to patients who are already vulnerable. Please help us to look after your loved ones by being a ‘responsible visitor’ of Musgrove Park Hospital.

Sick? Don’t prepare food for others!

An alarming number of outbreaks of stomach illness across the state should be a reminder to Iowans participating in gatherings where food is served. With more than a week remaining for holiday and year-end celebrations, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is asking sick Iowans to think twice before preparing food for others.

“If you’re healthy and you’ve been healthy for the last few days, go ahead and mix up a batch of cookies or slice up a fruit tray,” said IDPH Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. “But if you’ve had any sort of stomach illness, do not prepare food of any kind for others. In particular, symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea should be your ticket out of the kitchen until 48 hours have passed since your recovery.”

In the last 10 days, IDPH has been investigating reports of eight medium to large outbreaks of probable norovirus in five counties. Norovirus is a common cause of viral gastroenteritis (also called “the stomach bug”) and most of these outbreaks are associated with sick people preparing food for others.

Three groups got ill after eating at a restaurant where several food handlers had also been ill. Outbreaks were also associated with events like holiday parties and holiday potlucks, where foods were likely prepared and served by recently ill people.

“We’re also getting lots anecdotal reports of probable norovirus outbreaks in other areas of the state,” Quinlisk added. “This virus can be a real holiday spoiler, making your friends and loved ones sick for several days. So, if you are or have been sick, you’ll just have to wait for the next opportunity to make your signature fudge-you’re off kitchen duty until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped!”

52 Fukushima workers belonging to Tepco’s subcontract companies had diarrhea and vomiting.

They found norovirus from 3 of them.

According to Tepco, 12/15 AM, sub-contract workers had diarrhea and vomiting on the bus from their hotel to Fukushima plants.
Still one of them is in the hospital. They stayed in different hotels. Tepco suspects it’s from norovirus.
All of them were involved in the construction of the tank for radioactive waste.

KFL&A Public Health’s surveillance program that monitors symptoms presented at emergency department visits and admissions at area hospitals is showing a surge in gastrointestinal illness activity in KFL&A residents.

Norovirus, a gastrointestinal virus with symptoms that include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, chills, sore muscles, and a low-grade fever, often circulates during the holiday season.

Reports from the Syndromic Surveillance Program at KFL&A Public Health are showing a sharp rise in the number of norovirus symptomatic visits to local hospitals. This norovirus activity is beyond what hospitals are experiencing with admitted patients. While vomiting appears to be the main symptom in children, diarrhea may be more common in adults. With illness resembling norovirus affecting many people across the KFL&A area in recent weeks, KFL&A Public Health’s message is simple: stay home until you’ve been symptom-free for 48 hours

Couples suing cruise firm over norovirus outbreaks

Luxury cruise operator Fred Olsen is facing a massive legal action over claims holidaymakers picked up the deadly norovirus sickness bug on one of its ships.

One couple from near Oswestry and another from near Craven Arms are among 134 people suing the liner over claims their holidays were wrecked by an outbreak of the bug.

Vomiting and Diarrhoea Bug Closes One Ward at Bedford Hospital

ONE ward at Bedford Hospital has been closed to new admissions and patient transfers due to an outbreak of viral gastroenteritis (norovirus).

Richard Wells Ward has been closed to help stop the potential spread of infection among patients, visitors and members of staff.

Visiting to the affected ward has been restricted to essential visiting only. This means only one visitor per patient per day.

Relatives and friends visiting patients on Richard Wells Ward are advised to telephone ahead to check with ward staff as to visiting arrangements and not to come in if their visit is not essential.

Those visiting all ward areas are reminded to wash their hands with soap and water on entering and leaving and not to visit if they themselves have had a stomach upset within the preceding 72 hours.

Director of Nursing and Patient Services Eiri Jones, said: “Visiting to Richard Wells Ward has been restricted to help stop the possible spread of norovirus infection across the hospital.

“It is vital visitors observe the restrictions, as limiting visiting to affected areas really does help to stop the highly contagious norovirus infection spreading.

“If you do need to visit the hospital, please ensure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before entering and when leaving the ward. Alcohol gel does not kill norovirus germs – but soap and water will remove them.

“Please do not sit on hospital beds when visiting and do not come in if you have been ill within the preceding 72 hours. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. Norovirus is extremely contagious and is easily passed through person-to-person contact, unwashed hands, touching surfaces and through virus particles carried in the air.

“If you have had norovirus you will still be infectious for 48 hours afterwards, which is why it is vital you do not visit the hospital during this time.

“We are doing our utmost to prevent norovirus spreading across the hospital, please help us by observing visiting restrictions, not visiting if it’s not essential for you to do so, ensuring you wash your hands with soap and water, not sitting on beds and not coming in if you have been ill yourself. Thank you for your support and understanding.”

Norovirus Information

Norovirus is a virus that causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. It can be transmitted from person-to-person, by consuming contaminated food or water or through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects;
The symptoms of norovirus infection begin about 12 to 48 hours after infection with the virus;
Symptoms include the sudden onset of nausea following by projectile vomiting and diarrhoea. You may also have a temperature, aching limbs and a headache;
Symptoms usually last for 12 to 60 hours, with most people making a full recovery within one to two days;
If you have norovirus symptoms it is very important to stay well hydrated as sickness and diarrhoea can cause dehydration. Drink plenty of water – taking small sips at regular intervals – or take an over-the-counter rehydration remedy;

If your symptoms have not cleared up in three to four days call NHS Direct on 0845 46 467 for advice or contact your GP surgery;
If your symptoms become more severe call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 for advice in the first instance.

Doncaster Royal Infirmary: Do not visit our patients !

As from the Doncaster Hospital Homepage (Given credit to this as this one of the few who actually update their website when an outbreak is known, we find this a VERY good policy and urge all other healthcare organisation to take an example of this!)

PLEASE DON’T VISIT AND RISK BRINGING MORE BUGS INTO HOSPITAL!

A number of wards at Doncaster Royal Infirmary are closed to new patients because they are affected by seasonal diarrhoea and vomiting, caused by the Norovirus.

So visitors – please stay away and don’t risk bringing infections into hospital where vulnerable patients may be affected. Getting an infection while in hospital means a longer stay – and ‘blocks’ a bed that another patient may need.

Our advice is:

don’t come to hospital as an inpatient, outpatient, or visitor if you have any signs of a stomach upset

at home, always wash your hands thoroughly after using the lavatory and before handling food

if visiting someone in hospital is unavoidable, wash your hands before and after the visit. Use the hand gel provided at the entrances to the wards. Please don’t use patients’ lavatories

if you have had a stomach upset, wait until you have been free of symptoms for at least 48 hours before visiting hospital where there are sick and vulnerable patients.

Education chiefs confirmed a pupil from Dalry Primary School had been stricken by norovirus and five other children and a teacher have also been sent home as a precaution.

Headteacher Sally Barker: “We are getting to the end of term, everyone is tired and the central heating is on.

“We sent a letter home as a precaution after the first child was confirmed to have norovirus. Another school near by has been hit quite hard by it.
